A Place For Considerate Political Discourse!

Traffic on this blog absolutely blew up yesterday when I posted a parody about the text of President Obama’s speech that he was going to give today to the school children of the country .  I got positive and negative commentary on the post.  One thing that is for sure is that the fact that the President was giving this speech resulted in a real tornado of commentary and reaction.

Individuals personally told me that they were going to keep their kids out of school because they didn’t want the Presidents left-wing agenda forced upon their kids.  For those whose kids stayed home today, here is a short list of things that your kids missed. Each statement is derived from the text of the President’s speech.

  1. School-aged children have a responsibility to themselves and to their country to apply themselves in school.
  2. Every child has something to offer their country.
  3. Education is the way to find out what you have to offer.
  4. The future of the country depends upon individuals finding out what they have to offer and then offering it.
  5. The country needs every one of you.
  6. Quitting in school is quitting on yourself and your country.
  7. There are no good excuses for negative behavior in school.
  8. Where you are now, is not where you will end up in the future.
  9. You can write your own destiny through your educational success.
  10. Set goals for yourself.
  11. Ask questions, ask for help, it’s a sign of strength.
  12. Don’t give up on yourself!
  13. Do your best and don’t let yourself down.

As I look at the contents of the President’s speech I am hard pressed to find anything that is uniquely Democratic or Republican contained therein.  In fact, I believe that this speech could have been given by any Republican or Democratic politician with equal effectiveness.

There is nothing in the speech that could have been uniquely culled from those on the right or those on the left of the political spectrum.  Why do you suppose that is?  Could it be that an American President gave a speech to American school children for the purpose of exhorting them to do their best in school so that they can make a positive impact in their world, and specifically their America. No red speech, no blue speech….just an American speech.

Distrust of the American President once again resulted in highly vocal and exceedingly outrageous claims being made by those on the right side of the political spectrum.   America was once again divided by political ideology. The spin masters at the control of talk-radio, the blogosphere,  and other political venues have once again been made completely irrelevant.

To those who made such an uproar about indoctrination and agenda’s in the President’s speech I offer the following:   there is an outside chance that hearing a speech such as the one given today might have made you more open to the possibility that not everything has to be politicized and categorized as red, blue, good, evil, American or anti-American.  Maybe then you would have realized the value of an American President helping parents, teachers, and school administrators  motivate our kids.

Unfortunately, many children were at home today, learning a lesson from parents who are too closed-minded to allow their children to think for themselves.  Regardless of your political identity, tonight would have been a great time to discuss this openly with your kids around the supper table.  It would have been great to learn what they thought of the speech.  If you didn’t like what they learned,  you could have taken the opportunity to indoctrinate your kids to your own set of beliefs…something the President didn’t remotely attempt to do.
